NFL Week 12 Game Preview: Steelers at Broncos

February 21, 2019 by Lopez Leave a Comment

Ben Roethlisberger suffered through another brutal Jaguars game for more than three quarters before a glorious dive toward the end zone turned an ugly defeat into a thrilling victory.

It didn’t matter that the overstuffed passer’s “dive” was really kind of a stretch and reach. What matters is the low hit of a Jacksonville defender allowed Big Ben to stay off the ground long enough for his hand to carry the ball over the plane of the goal line, giving another win to the rolling Steelers.

Denver kicker Brandon McManus didn’t provide quite the same drama as Roethlisberger, but his last-second field goal gave Broncos fans reason to celebrate just as hard as the Steelers’.

The Broncos took advantage of a pair of late mistakes from Chargers’ quarterback Phillip Rivers to pull off a comeback victory after three-quarters of miserable football in Denver.

Quarterback Case Keenum had just 59 passing yards heading into the fourth quarter, and the Chargers had more than twice as many first downs as the Broncos. But Denver was able to hold it close enough that Rivers’ pick-six and a bad decision that saved 40 seconds for Denver’s last-minute field goal drive could give them a dramatic one-point win.

Injuries and notes

Rookie receiver DaeSean Hamilton injured the same knee he sprained earlier in the year and could miss this week’s contest.

Safety Dymonte Thomas (ankle) and cornerback Bradley Roby (concussion) join linebacker Brandon Marshall (knee) on the questionable list for Sunday.

Pittsburgh tackles Matt Feiler (pectoral) and Marcus Gilbert (foot) are questionable, with Feiler leaning closer to doubtful than his teammate.

Defensive tackle Stephen Tuitt is also questionable with an elbow injury.

How well did Ben Roethlisberger feel after his late-game heroics? This is the first time in weeks he is not listed on the injury report.

Coaching matchup

Vance Joseph is under the gun in Denver despite last week’s dramatic win. Maybe a few more of them will help keep him on the Broncos’ payroll in 2019. A win is a win, and you can argue Denver’s defense caused Rivers’ meltdown, but this type of win won’t take much heat off Joseph.

Mike Tomlin continues to push all the right buttons in Pittsburgh, although this game was ugly for most of the day. But bouncing back from their1-2-1 start after so many preseason prognosticators questioned the Steelers’ ability to defend their AFC North crown has to be satisfying.

Who will win the Broncos-Steelers game?

You could argue that the Steelers are due for a loss, or that the thin air at Mile High Stadium might affect them. You can even say the Broncos have some momentum coming into Week 12.

But in the end, the team with superior talent and coaching usually wins out.

NFL Week 14 Game Preview: Broncos at 49ers

February 20, 2019 by Lopez Leave a Comment

If the San Francisco 49ers expected teams to take them and the 2-10 record lightly as they finished the third quarter, they were taught a lesson about how playoff-caliber teams approach the season.

Seattle laid a 43-16 whipping on the 49ers, who never seemed too interested in playing football. The frustration of Kyle Shanahan was evident on the sideline as Matt Breida went down and his defense gave up four touchdowns on only 11 pass completions.

Now the Niners face the resilient Broncos, who received some bad injury news this week when leading receiver Emmanuel Sanders tore an Achilles tendon in a non-contact practice Wednesday. With Demaryius Thomas traded to Houston, the Broncos will rely on rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton.

Sutton comes off his biggest game of the year, while Hamilton led the team in snaps last week, but did not catch a pass. There are no experienced wide receivers behind this pair, with Tim Patrick likely to be tapped as the WR-3. Devontae Booker could also be called on to man the slot.

Phillip Lindsay just racked up 157 rushing yards, and the team might need similar performances to help distract the defenses for the receivers. Royce Freeman isn’t as flashy but could see some more carries if the running game takes over.

Injuries and notes

Sanders could miss part of next season, too because of this injury. Denver cornerback Chris Harris is out for this game. Several other defensive players are listed as questionable but expected to play.

Matt Breida (ankle) is out, while Marquise Goodwin (personal), and Pierre Garcon (knee) could also miss this week’s action.

Both of the 49ers’ starting safeties are questionable.

Coaching matchup

Kyle Shanahan is taking plenty of notes and you can bet that while he is being given a do-over on this injury-riddled season, a bunch of players won’t be back if they don’t look more interested in playing football over the final four weeks.

Vance Joseph can’t catch a break. Just as sportswriters were crowning the Broncos as the favorites among a slew of 6-6 teams vying for a wild-card spot, his most important veteran is lost. The Broncos rookies have the skill, but can anyone replace the leadership of Sanders? If the Broncos survive to make some playoff noise, it could save Joseph’s job. If they slip out of the postseason, fair or not, there could be a new man holding the clipboard come 2019.

How to watch the 49ers-Broncos game

Much of the Western United States can tune into this game via DirecTV’s live stream feed of the CBS broadcast. DirecTV carries all the NFL action you can handle and lets you watch it on any internet connected device.

DirecTV Now also carries dozens of movie and entertainment channels for when there is no game. Best of all, they deliver all that for a fraction of what cable and satellite cost.

Internet TV providers, like DirecTV Now, Sling TV, and Fubo TV don’t require any expensive or unsightly equipment. They’ll never ask you to sign a contract, either. You sign up for a monthly subscription you can cancel easily at any time.

Check out their websites and sign up for a free trial. You’ll quickly understand why so many of your neighbors have already done away with cable and satellite.

Who will win the 49ers-Broncos game?

Denver took a blow with Sanders’ injury, but they also made it through the toughest first ten-games on the NFL schedule to emerge in prime position for a playoff run. There is a character on this team, as well as a bunch of inexperienced rookies who don’t know when they are supposed to lose.

San Francisco is simply evaluating talent for next season. It will be obvious from watching this game.

NFL Week 16 Game Preview: Broncos at Raiders

February 19, 2019 by Lopez Leave a Comment

By the time this game kicks off, Denver should realize the end of its playoff aspirations. Victories by any one of four teams would put the Broncos out of reach of the second AFC wild-card spot.

The Raiders will know if the 3-11 Cardinals lost again, as well as the trio of 4-10 teams. Of course, they’ll deny they are playing for draft position, but it is interesting to follow.

That would make the last Monday Night Football game of the season kind of a dud, involving no one in the playoff race and without any real sense of urgency to win.

Denver could hope a .500 record might save their coach’s job. Or they might just figure it looks nicer than 7-9 or 6-10.

But it will be hard to come off disappointing losses to the lowly 49ers and a heartbreaking 1-point loss to the Browns in front of their home fans. If the weather is cold or rainy, a half-empty stadium might make the task even tougher to get up for.

Oakland has played harder of late. They might sense that Denver is an emotionally depleted team and jump on them early.

Hopefully, pride and 2019 auditions will be enough to provide some entertainment in this final game of the weekend.

Injuries and notes

Neither team expects any significant players to miss this contest. No new injuries were reported.

Coaching matchup

Jon Gruden has the security of a 10-year contract to take any approach he wants to this game. Things are looking up a bit for the former-new Raiders coach. Just a few weeks after ownership claimed Gruden did not want to trade Khalil Mack before the season, wide receiver Amari Cooper went on record as saying Gruden was out of the loop on his trade to the Cowboys.

It makes you wonder about the relationship between Gruden and his general manager until you remember the general manager was just fired. Will Gruden play both roles next season?

Will Vance Joseph play any role in Denver next season? After being lauded for keeping his team in position to battle for a wild-card spot despite one of the toughest first-ten week schedules, Joseph’s team let him down. Losses to the Cardinals and Browns might spell doom for the embattled coach.

How to watch the Broncos-Raiders game

ESPN will send this game out to its contracted providers across the country Monday night. That means you can watch the live stream action on DirecTV Now.

DirecTV Now is a leading internet TV provider, offering all the local and national channels you need to follow your favorite teams all year round.

When there’s no game, DirecTV Now, like Fubo TV, Sling, and other internet TV providers, bring dozens of movie and entertainment channels to your favorite Internet-connected device.

Better yet, Fubo, DirecTV Now, and Sling do all that or just a fraction of what most people pay for a basic cable or satellite service. Plus, they don’t make you drill holes in your house or stick unattractive equipment on your roof.

You can watch this final Monday Night Football contest for free by taking advantage of the standard obligation-free viewing period offered by DirecTV Now, Fubo TV, or Sling.

After the game, check out what else they offer and learn why so many NFL fans already cut the cord with their satellite and cable provider to join the internet TV revolution.

Who will win the Broncos-Raiders game?

Denver has the superior team and the home field advantage for this primetime contest. They also have a ton of disappointment on their shoulders weighing them down.

Enough Raiders are auditioning for their next team to keep the visitors in this match. Look for a close contest.
